
Children who are read to at home are better prepared for school and continue to do well even through high school and college. Experts believe that children need to hear 1,000 stories read aloud to them before they start kindergarten! Each book read to a child provides an opportunity for early learning.

Public formal education usually does not start until age five or six. Therefore, parents and caregivers play a critical role as their child’s first teacher during those early years of birth through five.

Reading 1,000 books isn’t as hard as it might sound. If you read only one bedtime story every night for three years, you will have read 1,095 books! If you read just three books every day, you will have read 1,095 books in just one year!
So set aside time each day to read a book, any book (or reread those favorite stories), to your newborn, infant, or toddler. If you are really, Really, REALLY short on time, you can use audio books or the “READ TO ME” selections on many online sites such as those listed below:
