Tutoring Sessions

Students will be given an individual reading tutoring plan based on their needs.

However, every student's 1 hour tutoring session will include activities based on the:

 

5 BUILDING BLOCKS OF READING

1.    Phonemic Awareness

2.    Phonics

3.    Fluency

4.    Vocabulary

5.    Comprehension

Phonemic Awareness

(10 minutes)

This activity will include Reciting the Phonemic Alphabet.

  • Students will be shown a letter and asked to give its phoneme or letter sound. (For example: A "ah" apple; B "buh" ball, etc.)

  • When students are able to finish this activity easily, they will be asked to recite the letter phonemes without looking at the pictures.

Phonics

(virtual)

(15-20 minutes)

BOOM Cards will be used to practice phonics, grammar and spelling.

They range from fill in the blank type activities, answering single or multiple questions, and drag and drop type tasks. The tutor will walk the student through each card and explain any incorrect answers.

A variety of other online activities will include practice or review of vowels, letters blends, digraphs, synonyms, etc.

Students will also practice written work on paper or whiteboards.

Fluency - Vocabulary - Comprehension

(30 minutes)

The remaining 3 building blocks will be covered during the actual reading selection.

The student will be given a book to read aloud based on their reading level.

​

FLUENCY

Students are encouraged to read smoothly and without stopping.

Students are asked to pay attention to the punctuation marks to know when to pause or stop.

Students are encouraged to sound out unfamiliar words, then repeat the sentence.

​

VOCABULARY

Students will be asked the definition of different words in the story.

If the word is unfamiliar, students will be asked to:

     1. Use the pictures or other words in the sentence or paragraph to find the meaning of the word.

     2. Use a dictionary to find the meaning.

​

COMPREHENSION

Students will be asked questions after they have finished reading to determine if they understood the story.

​

A monthly progress report will be given for each student.
