ALPHABET FACTS
The ALPHABET is a group of letters used in writing and speaking a language. This group is usually listed in a fixed order which children are taught at a very young age. Every word spoken or written contains 1 or more letters of the alphabet.
The English Alphabet contains 26 letters which are divided into 2 groups:
VOWELS and CONSONANTS
The letters also come in two "sizes:"
LARGE letters are called - UPPERCASE LETTERS
(A-B-C-D-E)
SMALL letters are called - LOWERCASE LETTERS
(a-b-c-d-e…)
Every letter has both an UPPERCASE and a lowercase version. Children must learn to write both versions of each letter.
There are 5 VOWELS in the alphabet:
a, e, i, o, u
There are 21 CONSONANTS in the alphabet:
b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y*, z
*The letter "Y" makes a consonant sound when at the beginning of a word (like yard or yellow).
But "Y" makes a vowel sound when at the end of a word (like sunny or my).
The letter "Y" also makes a vowel sound when it is in the middle of a word (like dye or rye).
